Eglu

As we rescued some chickens from the British Hen Welfare Trust our flock has now grown to 7! This has meant more cleaning and the old henhouse became rickety and started falling apart so we have now invested in an Eglu which is much easier to keep clean. The girls are loving their new home and showing their appreciation by laying an abundance of eggs - although they'll need to lay a lot more to even begin to contribute to the cost of their lovely new home.

New Chickens

As the chickens now have a much bigger  living space we have got 2 new chickens. They have settled in well and sorted out their 'pecking order' with Clucky and Diamond. They haven't got names yet but Miss JR will soon be naming them after composers. They are very friendly and both love to be stroked.

New Run

You may have noticed that the chickens have been treated to a wonderful new home, this fantastic work was carried out for us by the talented Jeff Cretch of J&J Handyman Service.

HUGE thanks for this amazing area which will give the chickens much more room to roam and scrabble on days when they aren't able to free range and will also enable the children to interact with the chickens much more easily.

Merry Chickens

Hello Chicken Fans.

This time we made our chickens a Christmas treat, chicken cake!

Here's how we made it......

We had lots of different vegetables which we peeled and chopped, this was all put into a large pot (peelings included!).

We then added some chicken pellets and a handful of corn which had been soaked in water to make it mushy.

After a good stir we cooked it all for about 20minutes (Mrs Davies stirred it whilst we cleaned the chicken house!).

Once cooked the mushy mixture goes into a dish and is sprinkled with corn, a wonderfully tasty treat for our chickens and they ate the lot!

Merry Christmas from all the children at chicken club.

Year 6 join the fun!

Welcome back chicken fans.

We are from Year 6 and have been getting to know the school chickens and how to look after them.

We discovered they enjoy cuddles and corn from our hands.

.......but mostly the heat from our laps!

Join us next time for more about the chickens.

Health Checks

Hello chicken fans! this time we gave our chickens some help to stay 'mite' free.

We gently checked under the chickens wings, mites usually like to hide here.

To help keep the chickens mite free we use a special powder.

Trying to get the powder under the chickens wing was quite tricky!!

We also checked their feet and gave them a cuddle before putting them back in their freshly cleaned house.

Thanks for reading, we always like to hear from you if you have a question or just to tell us what you think of our chickens.

See you next time,
The children from Chicken Club

Looking After Our Chickens

It can get quite smelly in our chicken house, this is why we clean them out every week.

We brush out the old bedding on the floor and in the nesting boxes.

The 'perches' can get dirty too because the chickens sleep on them (the wood raised off the ground)

Once clean we put shredded paper from the school office (shredded 'beacons') into the nesting boxes.

The floor is covered with fresh sawdust.

We even clean out the run!

We make sure our chickens always have a supply of 'layer Pellets'. A special food to keep our chickens happy and healthy. We also add 'grit' to help the chickens digest their food.

If you have any questions please leave a comment and we will get back to you.  Thanks for taking the time to read our blog.
